What is Tomb Raider: Legend?

Tomb Raider: Legend is the 7th part of the Tomb Raider series games. Like in the other Tomb Raider games, the main character is Lara Croft. Lara Croft is a Englishwoman who had a rich father. Lara Croft travels in the different parts of world finding different artifacts. Lara Croft is known as a archeologist, but also as a adventurer who will archive her goals no matter what. The story, like in the last parts of Tomb Raider games, is that Lara is trying to find some ancient and unique artifacts. To do this, she needs to do things, what require extremely good skills in athletic and stamina.

Lara Croft                                       Lara in a tomb                                Lara and Amanda

The game is a mix of reality and fantasy. Thought all of the Tomb Raider series tells about same thing, finding and obtaining artifacts, this part is even better. The storyline of the game is quite interesting; Lara is walking the steps of King Arthur and the Excalibur. The variation of the different places is not huge, but it isn’t either too small. During the game, Lara will visit different places, in different lands. This game doesn't tell only about the treasure hunting, it also tells the story of Lara Croft. Different flashbacks make the story even more colorfully. Someone can think, than there is not enough shooting in this game, but the game is a about adventuring, not having a war with the enemies. Even thought there still are places where you will be able to empty many magazines of bullets in the enemies.

The adventuring is the priority in this game. In the game Lara will get different challenges; from bosses to kill to different mechanisms that she needs to get working to get to the next place and a step closer to the legend of King Arthur. Lara will be climbing on the mountains and in high houses, but you will also find Lara in tombs undergrounds. A big priority in this game is to learn to use different mechanism and Lara’s skills to get pass different traps and barriers. The traps make the game more fun to play, because they make some color to the normal climbing, jumping and shooting action. Even thought there aren’t many choices in the map where you could go, it doesn't matter, because there is a lot of work to get through the different challenges and traps. During the game you can actually see the "intelligence" of Lara while she will pass all the traps and barriers fast and easy. When you play more and more longer the game you will start to learn the buttons and when you have player enough you will start to enjoy the game even more because you can do the things like "the real Lara", when you see a trap incoming toward you just know what to do and Lara will avoid the trap like it would be a routine etc. That makes the game even more fun to play, because you will really learn to play it.

Locations and a bit of the story

These are the places where Lara Croft will adventure in this 7th part of Tomb Raider games. The places are organized in the same way as Lara visits them in the game. I also wrote a bit information about the missions in the different locations.

  • Tiwanaku, Bolivia- A ruined pre-Incan civilization place where Lara arrives by scaling the rocky cliffs of Bolivia. Lara’s mission is this place is to search and find  a stone dais, the stone is quite as the same as the stone where Lara’s mother disappeared when Lara was nine
  • Paraíso, Peru- Lara is going to meet one of her old friends called Anaya  in the town square. But what would the game be without shooting and soon the bullets will fly in the air. After this they will go to dig site where Lara lost many friends.
  • Tokyo, Japan - A piece of the ancient sword has been stolen by a Japans Mafioso Yakuza and Lara’s mission is to get it back. By jumping on the roofs and shooting the enemies she will be more closer to the answer of the mystery.
  • Ghana, Africa- Another piece of the sword is in the hands of James Rutland. He is currently in Ghana and that’s the place where Lara needs to go them. While traveling in Africa Lara will find a behind a lake and hidden from sight by waterfalls.
  • Kazakhstan- Lara's founding’s brings her after Africa to to an abandoned secret KGB testing facility where experiments with the sword fragment led to disaster. In this place the Lara’s shooting skills will be very useful and vital.
  • Cornwall, England - Only a bit later Lara will find herself in England investigating an abandoned tacky King Arthur tourist attraction and the catacombs.
  • Himalayas, Nepal - Lara will discover that the artifact that can re-charge Excalibur lies in the plane wreck where Lara and her mother once crashed. So, nothing less or more Lara will be soon climbing in the icy mountains of Himalayas.
  • Bolivia Redux - The place where Lara and Amanda will fight their final battle and revealed the final seacrets.
  • Croft Manor (optional), England- Croft manor is the manor of the Croft family. It includes many different mysteries and secret places where you can find different things. There you will also find your noble friends and a change to chance your outfit and etc. This level is not a must to play, but it is fun and makes the game more color. You can enter the Crofts Manor at anytime in the main menu.

Gear and weapons

  • Magnetic Grapple - This item can be used in climbing like all the other ropes in the game. You can also pull enemies to near combat range by throwing this on them. Lara can also pull different items with this rope.
  • Light Source - A bright light what will help you in the dark places
  • Headset - With this advanced peace of technology Lara is able to be in contact with Zip and Aliseter. It also has a video connection to them, so they can see what you can see.
  • Red Flares - Can be only used in some of the maps. They were used before the Light Source was invented. They create a red light around them.
  • PDA - PDA is Lara’s own workplace what she uses when she is on the field. It contains the data of items weapons, quest notes etc.
  • Rad - Lara’s modern binoculars. It can also be used to detect different movable items and mechanisms with the RAD mod.
  • Ducati - A very fast motorcycle that Lara uses in the game
  • Health Pack - Heals Lara. Can be found from many enemies

         Weapons

  • Twin Pistols - The pistols are Lara’s old good friends. They are a vital thing in surveying in Lara’s adventures. They have unlimited ammunition so you can use them when ever you want.
  • Shotgun - A simple pup-action shotgun with high damage. However it is only weapon for a close combat situations, but it makes a lot of damage.
  • Granade Launher - A good weapon to a bit more range grenade throwing. A good way to kill many enemies at the same time. It has also a great damage, but a long loading time
  • Assault Rufle - The weapon what Lara’s enemies often uses. You can also obtain it and use its high shooting ration to kill enemies. It also has a long range of shooting so it is a very good weapon.
  • SMG - A machine gun with high rate of fire. It is also a good weapon to brig enemies down with style and speed. Not so effective.
  • Grenades - In a place with many enemies the grenades are the best way to solve the problem. The grenades have a great damage, but you can’t cast them very far.

Graphics and sounds

the graphics and sounds are not the best things in this game. Although the graphics are not so that super, they aren’t so bad either. The maps look very nice and real. Different effects make them even more beautiful for watch. Because Tomb Raider is a mix of reality and fantasy it contains many different textures and landscapes. Also different "magic’s" makes some color to the game. Different interactive "videos" in the game (you need to press fast different buttons to make Lara move) makes the game more fun, and the movements and athletics skills of Lara are one on the main points in this game. The movements are made very nice and its easy and fun to control Lara while she is moving. The thing, what the game makes could have done better is the shooting episodes and the long motorcycle episodes. Some of the shooting episodes can be boring because the shooting goes quite like pressing a button whole time. Of course while playing with harder difficult level you need to jump and try to avoid the enemy bullets, which makes a bit live to these sections. The motorcycle missions and episode is also sometimes fun. But the motorcycle mission in Kazakhstan is a way too long. If you want to find action, you will find it in this part of the game, but I believe that this episode is too long to everyone. Ye, it contains much shooting and high speed driveling with a motorcycle, but it is a way too long and you just do whole time the same thing, drive and shoot.

Amanda transforming                                Long way down                                           Hard work

The shooting episodes have changed a bit, but still there are some familiar things from other Tomb Raiders. A change to another games Lara is not killing the animals so much anymore, but, the commandos what is in the game might even make the game a bit boring to play. You can shoot then many times, but still they are moving. Also Lara takes many shots. The best, and fastest way to kill someone in the game is to throw a grenade. But if Lara gets hit and she is somehow going to die she can just use the health pack, what drops often, and she’s again in full health. The AI in the game isn't that good either. The enemies keep on running circles and they hide behind boxes and waits, even if you throw a grenade next to them. In close combat situation they just freeze. The enemy troops might even be harm for the games full image. In the next part i hope they develop them, or leave away. But not all the shooting things has gone wrong. The different shooting during the game, not killing the enemies, but hitting different targets to make them work, or broke, makes the game more colorful and I really like this.
